Petaluma California's Salute To American Graffiti
Interview with John Furrer
Scene's and interviews from the 2006 salute
In 1962--cruising highway 54/70, north/south artery from El Paso TX to points N--in Alamogordo NM. With the girls, in one of three family station wagons (mine was a 1952 Plymouth name "The Bomb"). If we accidentally happened to maybe drive a little fast to keep the carsful of boys (and airmen from the base) from overtaking us (girls rule, boys drool) Officer Ochoa knew that when both cars peeled off, he was to follow the naturally criminally-minded males.
Or, in a "date"s Impala: Mickey's was 1962 and much coveted; Gilbert's a tad older but very cherry. Of course--Bobby's 57 Bel Air, black w/white top, chrome fan, white tuck&roll leather interior done in Ciudad Juarez.
Which was where we often found ourselves, usually in The Cavern. We were a mixed bunch, so some of us had skin that showed in blue light, some of us were just teeth. Sloe gin fizzes--quel sofistiquee. A dangerous town but we must have carried an aura made up of incredible good luck and beer fumes; that was the group (more like a herd, really) when it included girls--the boys often ran into trouble without our presence mitigating the Juarez PD.
And the 80 miles from Alamo to CJ--45 minutes going, often less returning. On THAT road, we all survived. Not so from Alamo to Socorro, but that's another story. Another white tuck&roll with a streak of lipstick on the ceiling from front to back, surrounded by blood.
If my kids had ever tried doing what I did, I would have locked them in their rooms until they were 30.
